Child Protection

Safeguarding children

All our children and young people need to be and feel safe in church and at church related events and activities. It is now also a legal requirement for all those working directly with children to be checked in line with government legislation.

To help you with this, the Diocesan Safeguarding Children Team based at The Old Deanery can offer you advice about particular concerns, training courses, resources and information. This link will take you directly to the Safeguarding pages of the Diocesan Website.

Parish responsibilities

• Each parish or benefice needs to have an appointed person for safeguarding children in post. This position needs to be approved by the PCC and contact details sent to the Old Deanery. This person needs to have been fully checked in line with the safe recruitment procedures

• That the appointed person for safeguarding children understands their responsibilities and is encouraged to attend a diocesan training day

• Ensure that key people in the parish attend safeguarding training and know how to respond if a disclosure is made or there is concern about someone who may pose a risk of harm to children

• Ensure that in the parish you are following the full safe recruitment procedure in the child protection policy packs (dated 2008) and including references, job description and the name of a supervisor

• Include ISA registration as a requirement for new people in role and others at later dates according to the roll out programme

• Ensure that those who work with children and young people apply for ISA registration at the right time

• From October 2009 there will be a duty to make reference to ISA concerning anyone who may pose a risk of harm or relevant conduct
